This compact Kyoto plan separates the east and west of the city and leaves room for meals, quiet moments, and changes of mind.
Day one: the eastern streets
Build the day around one temple visit and a walk through nearby historic streets. Choose the exact temple based on your interests and its current visitor arrangements. Leave the middle of the day open for a seated lunch rather than planning continuous sightseeing.
Keep the first evening simple
Walk only as far as you comfortably want to go after dinner. Do not turn a peaceful neighborhood into a photo hunt. Follow posted signs, respect private lanes, and remember that an atmospheric street is still someone’s neighborhood.
Day two: a western outing
Give Arashiyama its own time. Select one main visit and one additional walk, then decide how much energy remains. If a popular section is crowded, slow down or change the order; avoid stepping into closed areas for a clearer photograph.
Leave a return margin
Check the trip back before adding a final stop. If you are leaving Kyoto that day, allow for collecting bags and reaching the correct station platform. It is better to finish with a calm cup of tea than a rushed connection.
